Drama Tour « RIVERMAN South Africa

Drama Tour

December to Easter. Class 2-3+ at higher levels. Wild fun for over 14’s.
Down LookSharp and Theatre to Gatsien (and Knucklecrusher at higher levels)
Bounching down Big Daddy

Bouncing down Big Daddy

Starting at either Otters’ Haunt or Rocky Ridge we do the rapids around Theatre, where there is always plenty of drama! LookSharp can have big boat-flipping holes, and after Theatre comes South Africa’s most famous rapid, Gatsien (“See-Your-Arse”), with its raft-munching stopper wave. This is one of the best sections of raftable whitewater in South Africa, a memorable experience that will make you forget everything else and concentrate on the next wave!

Open-mouthed excitement in a Croc 2-seater

We tend to avoid this route in the low-water months between April and October but it is offered when the water gets up over 25 cumecs. Not for nothing is this called the Drama Tour, with Theatre in the middle (where histrionics are certain). The rapids can be massive at higher levels when we Class this route as a 4, and then we run it continuously for all who want to experience the best in Vaal whitewater.

The scenery is breathtaking, with granite outcrops flanking the river as we head for Dome Bergland and leave the rolling plains behind.  If and when the river is over 200cumecs we add the huge wave train of Knucklecrusher and follow that with Wally’s Rapid for a facefull of foaming water. What a dramatic day, ending at the white cliffs of Kommandonek!

  • The route is suitable for any teenager or adult. Corporate groups and families with teenage children should opt to be guided by RIVERMAN’s top raftmasters. If you’re brave, take a 2-seater Croc or even the one-person Cataraft.
